The “U periodu krize, jače se grize!” performance is the latest work by the Led Art art group. So far, it has been staged three times: on 31 October 2021 in front of Hotel Belgrade in Nemanjina Street, within the ”ART WEEKEND BELGRADE” manifestation; on 2 August 2022 during the closing of the “ReCAPITULATION: Disobedient objects / subjects 1992 – 2022” exhibition, on the plateau in front of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina in Novi Sad; and on 4 December 2022.

Independently of the context, the artwork is performed in two stages. The first stage is represented in the medium of installation and/or intervention comprised of props needed for the performance – a red carpet, a carpet hanger, work coveralls and carpet beaters. All props are positioned in the exhibition space so that observers cannot identify them as works of art, but as something very similar to objects with obvious practical uses. For example, the red carpet is always positioned at the entrance to the exhibition space so that visitors walk over it during the exhibition. The performative function of the listed props becomes apparent in the second stage, during the closing of the exhibition, when the designated Shock Cooperative team (members of Led Art) carry them outside of the exhibition space. The red carpet is mounted on the hanger, the designated team of performers/cleaners puts on the coveralls and begins using the carpet beaters. During the cleaning of the carpet, the observers are invited to put on coveralls and take part in the realization of the performance. The performance ends when the last carpet beater breaks against the carpet.

The sound of carpet beating is of an associative nature and relations form depending on the context of the performance. It is upon us – the designated team, cleaners, performers – and you – the observers, also cleaners and performers – to discover these relations.

About the Collective:

Shock Cooperative (Šok ZaDruga) is the primary project of a distinguished artistic and activist phenomenon that left its mark on Serbian art practice during the post-Yugoslav war and the period that followed – Led Art (1993-2001). The “Led Art” Multimedia Centre (“Led Art” MMC) was then contextually renamed to Art Clinic (2002-2012), and then to Shock Cooperative. Its program is currently realised in two gallery spaces in Novi Sad – The Central Gallery of Shock Cooperative, Shock Corridor. One of Shock Cooperative’s most important activities is the activation and inclusion of young creators, with a special emphasis on active engagement with the community they live and work in.
